The Dayton Region is transforming itself from a region once known for its automotive manufacturing into a hub of innovation — a place where research, technology, and production meet to advance global innovation and economic competitiveness. Unlike many of its Midwestern neighbors, the Dayton Region has a strong concentration of research and development and a capacity for innovative manufacturing. These assets alone make the Dayton Region a promising player in the global economy.
Yet just as critical to regional growth and development is the need to measure its progress. As Bill Gates recently wrote in a essay published in The Wall Street Journal, “You can achieve incredible progress if you set a clear goal and find a measure that will drive progress toward that goal.”
The Dayton Region Innovation Index — i^2 — has been developed by the Dayton Development Coalition to further the goal of strengthening the regional economy and transforming the Region into a hub of innovation that is an important player in the global economy. By understanding where our currents gaps are, the Region can work collaboratively to effectively address those challenges, prioritizing investment, aligning resources, and engaging the community in the solutions.
This living document will be examined by the Region’s stakeholders and strategic partners and will be adapted as needed to better reflect the Region’s barriers and opportunities. Although the DDC expects this to a be an annual publication, the hope is that ten years from now, it will look much differently. Not only will increased access to data provide us with different methods of measuring, but some measures may no longer be relevant as the Region determines new goals and strategies and therefore related measurements.
For now, the i^2 measures four performance areas: society, talent, commercialization, and global fluency. Each section includes various measures that will provide a view of the Dayton Region, while providing a baseline on which future reports can be monitored. Each section is a critical area for economic development, and important goals are connected to each of those areas.
This thread will be open to the public, and will contain general information on this initiative. Members will be provided addition threads to engage in detailed discussion surrounding the performance areas and strategies addressing those areas.
